From 16th until 18th September, Thonet will be part of Design London Shoreditch showcasing design classics with a contemporary twist at House of ICON. Known for its long tradition of creating communicative spaces, the German manufacturer presents two new collection: JS . THONET - A PERSONAL INTERPRETATION BY JIL SANDER and the patented dark canework DARK MELANGE. House of ICON takes over the Grade II listed Shoreditch Town Hall where brands will show products for residential and hospitality projects in a uniquely British atmosphere.
Jil Sander’s collaboration with Thonet is her first foray into the world of furniture design. With the JS . THONET signature collection, she has taken the most famous tubular steel classics from the late 1920s and put her own stamp on them. In her two lines, SERIOUS and NORDIC, the designer has reinterpreted the iconic S 64 cantilever chair, adding an extra touch of elegance and class – with high-gloss lacquered wood details, refined tubular steel frames, and seats and backrests made of Viennese canework or leather in a nuanced colour palette.
Thonet first presented its new elegant dark canework in a collection with Sebastian Herkner in 2024. Now DARK MELANGE has been added to the Thonet portfolio as a standard material and is available for all different kinds of models. This dark version of Thonet’s “Viennese canework” lends the popular classics a whole new character, allowing them to serve as statement pieces in public and private spaces. The canework is dyed naturally and osciliates between a rich black, dark chocolate brown and light natural tones when it catches the light.
