German fashion designer Jil Sander is internationally renowned for her purist aesthetics. Her catwalk collections consistently featured striking cuts, exceptional material quality and an innovative approach. Her collaboration with Thonet is her first foray into the world of furniture design.

JS . THONET Edition

The collaboration between Jil Sander and Thonet is based on a shared understanding of timeless design, quality materials and precise craftsmanship. “Jil Sander’s fashion designs have always been synonymous with understated, elegant luxury – timeless pieces to last a lifetime, just like furniture from Thonet,” adds Norbert Ruf, Creative Director at Thonet. “Our aim is to create lasting value with our products.” This approach shapes the entire JS . THONET collection, which currently includes the S 64 and S 32 cantilever chairs, the S 1070 table, the S 411 armchair and footstool and the B 97 sidetable. All of these products are available in both the SERIOUS and the NORDIC lines.

Creativity requires continuity and habit, but it is also not possible without a vision.

In her design approach, Jil Sander sees herself as closely aligned with the Bauhaus philosophy and with Marcel Breuer in particular. “It was important to Marcel Breuer to combine industrial techniques and components with attractive, high-quality traditional materials such as leather, wood and tubular steel. He strove to reconcile avant-garde aesthetics with an appreciation for comfort. This approach showed foresight and makes all the difference on the market today.”

Her collaboration with Thonet was her first foray into the world of furniture design, in which she used her mastery of colours and structures to reinterpret an iconic Bauhaus design. Sander’s redesign of Marcel Breuer’s S 64 cantilever chair reflects her design philosophy, which takes traditional values and classic parameters and gives them a contemporary twist. Using a delicate balance of the perfect materials and colours, Jil Sander has given Thonet’s tubular steel classics a new sensual quality and lent them fresh appeal. DONATION TO DIE NEUE SAMMLUNG

On 12 March 2026, the German furniture manufacturer Thonet donated two S 64 cantilever chairs from the ‘JS . THONET’ signature collection to ‘Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum’ in Munich. Prof. Dr. Angelika Nollert, Director of Die Neue Sammlung, emphasises the design significance of the work.
