KUNSTMIN

In the course of restoring the historic “Schouwburg Kunstmin” theatre in Dordrecht, the theatre café was furnished with a colourful combination of Thonet’s Vienna Coffee House Chairs and matching barstools. The Rotterdam-based interior designers of Studio Makkink & Bey had the 90 bentwood chairs of series 214 and 20 barstools manufactured in line with their own ideas: the individual wooden elements of the seating furniture are lacquered in different colours. Lush yellow, subtle light blue and various brown and natural shades were used for the seats, backrests and legs – only a few copies look alike. In combination with the multi-colour wooden floor and colourfully tiled front of the bar, they unfold a vivid experience for the palate and eyes of the visitors to the theatre café.

The “Schouwburg Kunstmin” was designed by architect Jan Verheul in the late 19th century and extended in 1939 by Sybold van Ravesteyn in the neo-baroque style. During the building’s renovation in 2014 the planning team of Greiner van Goor Huijten Architecten and Studio Makkink & Bey put special emphasis on the preservation of the cultural and architectural characteristics of the historic building.
