KaDeWe Department Store

Berlin

Comfortable seating for two new restaurants in Berlin’s KaDeWe department store

Opened in 1907, the Kaufhaus des Westens luxury department store at Kurfürstendamm is a Berlin institution. Known as KaDeWe, it is the most famous department store in Germany with 60,000 square metres of retail space dedicated to high-end brands. More than 50,000 customers walk through its doors on a daily basis for the ultimate shopping experience. A project to remodel the store’s interior has been running since 2016 under the aegis of Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas (OMA). The entire sixth floor has been converted into an luxury food hall with over 30 restaurants, bars, food counters and a terrace with a beautiful view of the city. On this new-look sixth floor, or “die Sechste” as it is fondly referred to in German, Brasserie Hélène and the Fischkutter restaurant serve up creative culinary delights complete with a view.

Brasserie Hélène

Brasserie Hélène offers a modern take on classic French cuisine in a relaxed yet elegant interior. Its bistro tables with marble tabletops and colourful legs are complemented by upholstered chairs from the Thonet 118 range: the 118 chair in the colour RAL 6012 (black-green) and the 118 F with armrests in the same hue as well as a high-gloss lacquered version in RAL 3020 (traffic red), all with a matching upholstered seat. Minimalist, authentic and sophisticated: the 118 is a classic wooden chair that affords a subtle elegance to any dining table or restaurant. The principle behind it was introduced by Michael Thonet in the mid-19th century as he attempted to reduce a chair to the fewest elements possible. Created by famous designer Sebastian Herkner, the 118 chair is a contemporary take on Thonet’s classic bentwood design. Herkner’s design pays tribute to the company’s heritage while taking it a step further and adding refined details that make the chair even more distinguished. The 118 H barstool version with its upholstered seat and chrome-plated footrest are also great additions to the new Brasserie Hélène.

Restaurant Fischkutter

In the Fischkutter restaurant next door, guests can enjoy fresh seafood in an elegant interior styled with natural stone, dark wood and leather. The restaurant has opted for Thonet’s S 32 tubular steel cantilever chairs with leather covers in a variety of muted shades. The S 32 was designed by Marcel Breuer in 1928 and Thonet has been manufacturing the model since 1930. Thanks to its minimalist aesthetics and clean lines, this classic piece looks just as good in private homes and meeting rooms as it does in waiting areas or restaurants.
