A traditional farmhouse in Austria’s beautiful Bregenz Forest has been transformed into a contemporary home by its owners, an architect and a doctor who were looking for peace and tranquillity. Their project masterfully combines new and old: characteristic elements that reflect the region’s building and craftsmanship traditions have been preserved within the approximately 100-year-old house’s fundamental structure. The homeowners have also brought in modern touches by redesigning numerous elements within the house, creating exciting contrasts between the past and the present. Wooden panels on the interior walls tie the entire design together. The home’s harmonious overall appearance lives from the small irregularities, nooks and imperfections typical of an older house.

The design’s interplay between old and new along with a special emphasis on the high-quality, natural wood used throughout is also reflected in the choice of furniture. For the seating in the bright and inviting open-plan kitchen, the couple chose Thonet’s iconic tubular steel S 64 V cantilever chairs in ash with canework seats. Another of these classic chairs can also be found in the office, providing ergonomic comfort in a calm and welcoming room that lends itself to deep concentration.

The covered terrace, which sits at the same level as the surrounding meadow, features a wonderful south-facing view of the idyllic valley below. This can be enjoyed in comfort from one of six S 40 F cantilever chairs in the Thonet All Seasons outdoor version, the perfect choice for a relaxing hour or two.
