Functionality and acoustics in Kronberg’s Casals Forum

Thonet has supplied more than 370 custom-made editions of its S 169 PVF chair for the Casals Forum chamber music concert hall in the German town of Kronberg im Taunus. The Frankenberg-based furniture manufacturer teamed up with architects and acousticians to develop a chair – based on the original from Delphin Design – that would meet the most stringent safety standards and most discerning acoustic demands. With its comfortable upholstery, the chair blends in perfectly with the warm, transparent interior, which has been designed to create the perfect acoustics for chamber music. The Casals Forum opened in 2022 and is named after the Catalan cellist Pablo Casals, who is known around the world for his musical virtuosity as well as for his commitment to democracy and human rights. This venue, designed by Volker Stab, hosts up to 80 public concerts and numerous workshops every year.

Custom-made concert hall seating: aesthetics and acoustics

As well as having to comply with the safety standards typically demanded of buildings in the contract sector, seating for concert halls also involves very particular acoustic challenges. In this case, Thonet has produced custom-made editions of its S 169 PVF chair, which have been integrated into the acoustics of the hall itself. The upholstered chairs are covered with a mottled dark brown and black Hallingdal 65, a wool and viscose fabric. This material was chosen to match the wood used for the venue’s convex and concave ceiling and wall elements. In the middle of each chair’s backrest is a rectangular cut-out, to which a clearly visible seat number plate can be attached. Armrest coverings in smoked oak have been bent to fit the black powder-coated tubular steel armrests and milled into shape. All the edges of the armrest coverings are gently rounded and their mounting materials are hidden.

Custom-made concert hall seating: aesthetics and acoustics

Thonet’s expertise in concert hall seating is particularly evident in the technical specifications and functionality of these sound-absorbing chairs. Thanks to the armrests, which are bent slightly outwards, the chairs can be positioned in a circular formation. They can also be tightly stacked and feature a patented linking technology, which is a space-saving way to connect the chairs safely and easily without tools. On the back legs of each chair there are also two metal brackets that attach it to the ground.

Longevity and reparability

Björn Stuhlmann, CEO of designfunktion Rhein-Main GmbH, was responsible for the concert hall’s interior design and explains: “Sustainability played an important role in this project. The Casals Forum is one of the most sustainable concert halls to operate in the world.” With its ice storage air conditioning system, the building is – to the best of our knowledge – the first carbon-neutral concert hall. “Therefore, it was, of course, important that the interior also be furnished with sustainable products. Thonet, with its 200-year-long history paired with its innovative spirit, was a natural choice. It is precisely this pioneering spirit that the manufacturer uses to turn standard models into custom-made pieces,” adds Stuhlmann. Creating products that are designed to last, Thonet’s manufacturing process is synonymous with resource-efficient production based on high-quality materials and craftsmanship. With its in-house repair service, the long-established company is also responding to the growing interest in repurposed furniture and materials and in preserving existing furnishings for the long term. For the Casals Forum concert hall there could be no better seating choice – conceptually, functionally or acoustically – than this custom-made version of the S 169 PVF.
