Anton Lorenz was born in 1861 in Hungary. A trained history and geography teacher, he moved to Germany in 1920. In 1927 he became managing director of Standard Möbel, a company founded by Marcel Breuer and Kálmán Lengyel. In 1928 he became the director of the company Desta, which he had founded. The clever businessman recognized the potential of Mart Stam's "cantilever" idea during these years; he came to an agreement with Mart Stam and launched a number of lawsuits against other manufacturers and plagiarists. These lawsuits would mark the history of industrial production of the cantilever chair from then on. In 1929, Thonet took over Standard Möbel. In 1932, Lorenz transferred all rights to the Desta program range to Thonet, where he became director of the intellectual property rights department. In 1935 his employment with Thonet ended; Lorenz continued his activity in the patent rights business. During the 1930s he developed a few tubular steel furniture models. In 1939, while traveling through the United States on a business trip, he was surprised by the breakout of the war in Europe. He stayed in the States and continued working as a furniture and patent entrepreneur. Lorenz died in 1964 in Greenwich/Connecticut.
